- The total number of reported pre-paid cards in issue in December 2008 was 1,723,7551. This was a rise of 14.7% to November 2008 and was mainly due to a surge in the number of ‘gift’ cards. Of the total cards in issue in December, the number of re-loadable cards was 1,312,459 (76.1%) while non-re-loadable cards amounted to 411,296 (26.5%). The total percentage of cards in issue used for ‘disbursement’ purposes was 30.8%; ‘travel’ accounted for 29.6%; ‘gift’ cards accounted for 23.6%; and ‘other’ cards accounted for 16.0% of the total card base
- The total number of UK and foreign transactions using prepaid cards in Q4 of 2008 were 6,133,386, of which 4,786,930 (or 78.0%) were point-of-sale while the number of ATM or cash acquisition transactions was 1,346,456 (22.0%). Also, there has been a 30.8% increase in point-of-sale transactions in Q4 compared toQ3 while only a 2.9% increase in ATM transactions in Q4 compared to Q3
- Total point-of-sale and cash acquisition transactions taking place in the UK via pre-paid in Q4 amounted to 5,101,419 (83.2%), while those that took place abroad amounted to 1,031,967 (16.8%). There was a 64.4% increase in foreign transactions in Q4 while only a 17.5% increase in transactions in Q4 taking place in the UK. By way of comparison, UK point-of-sale purchases using debit cards accounted for 98.4% of all debit card transactions in Q4 2008. In 2007, UK point- of-sale purchases using credit cards accounted for 92.7% of all credit card point of- sale transactions
- The total value spent at point-of-sale and through ATMs amounted to £267.5 million, an increase of 7.6% in Q4. Point-of-sale transactions in the UK and overseas amounted to 56.8% of the total value (or nearly £152.1 million) while ATM transactions accounted for 43.2% (or £115.4 million). There was an increase in Q4 of 7.6% and 7.7% in total point-of-sale and total ATM transaction values
- Overall, the value spent in the UK, which includes point-of-sale and ATM transactions, amounted to £231.4 million (86.5%), and the value spent abroad amounted to £36.1 million (13.5%). Also, there was a rise of 16.3% in Q4 transaction values in the UK and a 27.1% decline overall in values spent abroad.
- The ATV for UK point-of-sale transactions amounted to £33.70 in Q4, while for ATM transactions, this amounted to £83.70. Conversely, the ATV for foreign POS transactions amounted to £23.13, with foreign ATM transactions at £101.26
- The total volume of POS and ATM transactions per pre-paid card is currently 1.4 a month. There were 2.4 transactions per card for ‘disbursement’ cards per month; 1.8 transactions per card for ‘other’ cards; 0.4 transactions per card for ‘gift’ cards; and 0.4 transactions per card for ‘travel’ cards per month. For debit cards, there were 6.3 POS transactions per month. For credit cards, POS and ATM transactions per card per month are just over two and a half.
